As many as 49 members faced the same punishment today, adding to the shock surrounding the removal of 79 Opposition MPs from Parliament in a single day. As a result, there are now 141 MPs suspended overall this session—the most ever. Speaking of today, Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla suspended several MPs, including National Conference leader Farooq Abdullah, Congressmen Shashi Tharoor and Karti Chidambaram, NCP's Supriya Sule, and Samajwadi Party's Dimple Yadav.
Because of the significant security breach that occurred in the Lok Sabha last week, opposition MPs have been demonstrating in both Houses of Parliament. They have been calling for Union Home Minister Amit Shah to address the Parliament about the breach in security that allowed two invaders to enter the Lok Sabha chamber, hop from desk to desk, and blow colored smoke canisters.
Many of these 141 MPs are awaiting a report from the privileges committee over their behavior in the House, while the majority have been suspended for the duration of the term. The Congress MP Jairam Ramesh stated in a post on X that a "complete purge is being executed so that draconian Bills are passed without any meaningful debate" in response to the most recent wave of suspensions. He said that the BJP MP, whose office had allowed two intruders into Parliament, was being shielded by the suspension wave.
All Members of Parliament, according to Parliamentary Affairs Minister Pralhad Joshi, decided not to attend the Well at the official opening of the new Parliament building. He insisted that the MPs who were bearing the Prime Minister's altered image be held accountable.
