Lack of snowfall in the hills could cause the spring to be warmer.

The tourism industry in Kashmir and Himachal Pradesh has been negatively impacted by dry, snowless peaks, but the underlying causes will have a more concerning effect on the coming months as they may herald a warmer spring. Experts noted that the lack of significant western disturbances and the lack of rain and snow will affect the Rabi (winter) crop and point to early spring temperatures that are expected to be high. 79% of Jammu and Kashmir, 85% of Himachal Pradesh, 75% of Uttarakhand, and 70% of Punjab saw a shortage of rain in December.

According to data from the India Meteorological Department, there hasn't been any rainfall in the regions of Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, Punjab, West Rajasthan and Haryana, Chandigarh, and Delhi thus far in January. In the higher regions of Jammu and Kashmir, Uttarakhand, and Himachal Pradesh—regions that often experience a spike in tourist after winter—there hasn't been much snowfall. According to the experts, the lack of snow cover over the mountains means that heat would be absorbed more by the hills and plains, potentially resulting in an early arrival of summer-like temperatures.

Due to the early start of summer-like weather in March, most of India experienced only a brief spring season in 2022 and 2023. In 2022, a spring heatwave caused a glacial lake to burst in northern Pakistan, forest fires in Uttarakhand's hills, and at least 90 deaths throughout neighboring Pakistan and India. The nation's highest-ever average temperature was eventually reached in March 2022. with India's wheat output being impacted by the heat as well.

According to Copernicus Climate Change Service, January 9, 2023 surpassed the previous record set in 2016 by a significant margin, making it the warmest year ever. The year was 0.60°C higher than the average for 1991–2020 and 1.48°C warmer than the pre–industrial average for 1850–1900. It was also just shy of the 1.5°C threshold that the global community is aiming to maintain in the 2015 Paris Climate Agreement in order to avert the worst consequences of the problem.
