For the 2018 Rajya Sabha elections, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has selected Swati Maliwal, the head of the Delhi Commission for Women (DCW), as its candidate. Swati Maliwal, who is renowned for her support of women's rights, will be nominated and make her parliamentary affairs debut. Since Sanjay Singh and ND Gupta's current tenure as members of the upper house expire on January 27, 2024, the Political Affairs Committee (PAC) of the AAP has agreed to field them for their respective second terms in office.
Making way for Swati Maliwal is Rajya Sabha member Sushil Kumar Gupta, whose term ends this month. As per PTI, which cited an individual acquainted with the affairs, Gupta has expressed his desire to thoroughly engage in the electoral politics of Haryana, where the AAP intends to contest elections later this year. Forms and documentation for Sanjay Singh's Rajya Sabha renomination were signed earlier today by Delhi's Rouse Avenue Court. Singh was detained earlier today in connection with an alleged Delhi excise fraud and was charged with money laundering.
In response to a request from the top AAP leader, Special Judge M K Nagpal issued an order granting him permission to sign the necessary documents with the Tihar Jail Superintendent. Ten AAP members presently sit in the upper house, including former cricket player Harbhajan Singh and Raghav Chadha. The AAP's resounding win in Punjab contributed to a notable boost in the party's strength in the Rajya Sabha.
The election is scheduled for January 19 and the nominations for Delhi's three RS seats opened on January 3. The three AAP nominees are expected to be elected without opposition because the party holds 62 of the 70 seats in the Delhi parliament.
