When snowfall arrives around New Year's 2024, thousands of people swarm hill stations to witness it. Scientists that forecast weather patterns have forecast a drop in temperature around New Year's combined with snowfall in various locations, even though snowfall has already fallen in many hill stations. Given that New Year's Eve falls on a weekend and that snowfall would increase visitor numbers to locations like Shimla, Manali, Gulmarg, and Auli, among others, hoteliers are optimistic about the rain and snow forecast. The meteorological department has predicted light rainfall in isolated locations in the mid hills and light rainfall or snow in the higher hills from December 30 to January 1. Himachal Pradesh, Jammu & Kashmir, and Uttarakhand may see a wet period in the mid and higher hills around New Year's Day.
The 40-day worst winter season, known as "Chilla-i-Kalan," is presently engulfing Kashmir. It is characterized by a cold wave, significant temperature dips, and the freezing of water bodies, such as the Dal Lake and water supply lines, in various areas of the Valley. Also, for New Year's celebrations in its resorts, the Himachal Pradesh Tourism Development Corporation (HPTDC) has provided special packages that include Gala Nights, Dine 'N' dancing, DJs with live music, dancing competitions, and entertaining kid-friendly activities.
