There were tremors of an earthquake on Thursday afternoon in Delhi and the neighboring areas. The National Capital Region, comprising Noida, Ghaziabad, Faridabad and Gurugram, also felt the earthquake vibrations. The epicenter of the earthquakes was in Afghanistan, according to the National Center for Seismology, the Indian government's designated organization for tracking seismic activity. "Earthquake of Magnitude:6.1, Occurred on 11-01-2024, 14:50:24 IST, Lat: 36.48 & Long: 70.45, Depth: 220 Km ,Location: Afghanistan," it wrote on X.
The northern Indian states of Chandigarh, Jammu & Kashmir, Haryana, Punjab, and others were also affected by the tremors. The cities of Lahore, Islamabad, and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa were also affected by the tremors, according to reports from Pakistani media. At 2:50 p.m., India and Pakistan experienced seismic activity.
People in Delhi and the National Capital Region experienced panic after the earthquake, with many claiming that their furniture was trembling. Many allegedly ran out of their homes and places of employment, gripped by panic. In the meantime, at 2:20 pm, the Pakistan Meteorological Department recorded a 6.0-magnitude earthquake in some parts of the country. The epicenter of the quake was the Hindu Kush region of Afghanistan, reported PTI.
The US Geological Survey reported that the earthquake had a Richter scale value of 6.4. It struck in Afghanistan, 44 kilometers to the southwest of Jurm, at a depth of 206.6 km.
The epicenter of the earthquake was located 241 kilometers northeast of Kabul, Afghanistan, according to NCS. People in Delhi and the National Capital Region reported shaking furniture as a result of the earthquake, which caused alarm.
