In order to "ensure sustainable mobility" of vehicles in the vicinity, the traffic police in Delhi have referred the New Delhi Municipal Corporation (NDMC) to remove Sunehri Bagh Masjid from the capital. The NDMC is currently asking the public what they think about the mosque's possible removal.
Jamiat Ulama-i-In a letter to Amit Shah, the home minister, and Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Hind President Maulana Mahmood Asad Madani highlighted his concerns on the NDMC's notification. He emphasized that there could be harm to the "shared cultural heritage." Located next to Udyog Bhavan in the center of Lutyens Delhi is the old Sunehri Bagh Masjid. Historians and villagers alike are becoming increasingly concerned about the impending threat of demolition intended to relieve traffic congestion. A lot of people think that lakhori bricks were used in the construction of the mosque 200 years ago. Because of its historical significance, this mosque was designated as Heritage III in 2009.
“Sunehri Bagh Masjid is not just a mosque, it has a history that is closely associated with several of our freedom fighters. Hasrat Mohani, member of our Constituent Assembly used to stay here while attending the meetings. Care for its illustrious history,” historian S. Irfan Habib expressed on X.
