India announced 4,091 active cases of COVID-19 and five fatalities on Friday. Kerala had the highest number of Covid-19 cases (2,522), followed by Karnataka (568), Maharashtra (369), Tamil Nadu (156), and so on, according to data from the Union Health Ministry.
According to data from the health ministry, Covid-19 has claimed the lives of two persons in Kerala and one each in Maharashtra, Puducherry, and Tamil Nadu. By December 5, the number of cases per day had reduced to double digits, but cold weather and the appearance of a new strain had caused the cases to rise once more.

The Covid-19 special task force has once again been constituted by the Maharashtra government. Health Minister Tanaji Sawant encouraged attendees of the task force's inaugural meeting on Thursday to adhere to COVID-19 rules, wear masks in crowded areas when celebrating the New Year, and avoid visiting places of worship instead of being alarmed about the JN.1 variety. Comorbid individuals are encouraged to exercise special caution.
The government of Karnataka has made the decision to require infected patients to remain isolated at home for seven days, and to use Tele ICU to monitor those in intensive care units.
