During India's overwhelming defeat to South Africa in the first Test on Thursday, renowned batsman Virat Kohli made history by becoming the first player to achieve 2000 runs in seven separate calendar years. India was destroyed in three days by South Africa's accurate pace and Dean Elgar's graceful 185. When Kagiso Rabada, Marco Jansen, and Nandre Burger proved to be too dangerous for the other batters to handle, Kohli amassed runs rapidly by hitting quick singles and boundaries. After India lost by an innings and 32 runs, he scored 76 off 82 balls, bringing his 2023 total to 2006 runs.
It was the seasoned right-hand batter's seventh dismissal in 11 innings against Rabada after he was removed for an eight-ball duck.
This year has seen the star batter return to his brilliant best after a two-year slump in form. Kohli received the Man of the Tournament title despite India's inability to win the World Cup since he scored the most runs (765) during the competition.
Tendulkar, who retired from cricket ten years ago, amassed 49 tons of runs in 50 overs and 51 more in Test matches. However, in addition to his ODI tons, Kohli has amassed 29 triple-digit scores and one more T20I century, for a total of 80 hundreds in international cricket. Not only did Kohli smash Tendulkar's record that day, but he also surpassed the former's mark of 673 runs, the most in an ODI World Cup.
