Cyclone Michaung, which is anticipated to intensify into a severe cyclonic storm, has been creating havoc in Chennai, with continuous rains inundating the coastal cities since yesterday, interrupting regular life.
Waterlogging has been observed in several city regions at the same time. The night's persistent rain caused widespread waterlogging, causing traffic jams around Chennai. Due to heavy rain, the Chrompet GST Road was severely congested. The Vadakarai road from Madhavaram to Sengunram in northern Chennai is submerged, while the Thillai Ganga Nagar Subway in Alandur is closed due to significant waterlogging.
The damage has spread to Mahabalipuram, where power poles have fallen, causing severe power outages. Heavy rain is expected in Chennai and nearby areas over the next 24 hours, according to the Indian Meteorological Department. According to IMD, Cyclone Michaung is located over the Westcentral and surrounding Southwest Bay of Bengal, and is expected to intensify and cross between Nellore and Machilipatnam close to Bapatla as a severe cyclonic storm on the morning of December 5.
The Indian Army has so far rescued and supported 300 civilians in the Mugalivakkam and Manapakkam regions of Chennai, Tamil Nadu, after flooding. According to the Indian Army, 135 men equipped with necessary resources such as boats, flood relief supplies, and vehicles rendered aid and rescue. According to an official statement issued by the Chennai Police Department, at least five persons perished in separate events in Chennai, Tamil Nadu, as a result of the Michaung cyclone. A person was hurt as a result of the tree fall.
According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecast, both the winds and the very heavy rainfall are expected to subside progressively as the day progresses and the cyclone moves north of Chennai by Monday evening.
