On Wednesday, a large-scale demonstration was organized in Bengaluru by the pro-Kannada Karnataka Rakshana Vedike (KRV), which demanded that all Karnataka companies have nameplates and signboards written in the local language. The government's mandate that 60 percent of Kannada nameplates be used by all enterprises was met with a protest today. Under the direction of KRV state president TA Narayan Gowda, a "public awareness protest" got out of control when some protestors vandalized English-language signboards.
Outside Bengaluru's Mall of Asia, Karnataka Rakshana Vedike members shattered flower pots. Additionally, they damaged English-language signboards and splashed black ink on a few of them.
Every commercial store will need to put 60 percent Kannada nameplates and signboards, according to Tushar Giri Nath, chief commissioner of Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP). Legal action will begin on February 28 against those who refuse to comply.
Zone-by-zone surveys of all the commercial establishments along the city's 1400 km of arterial and sub-arterial roadways will be conducted. After the survey, stores that don't speak 60% Kannada will receive a notification. Tushar Giri Nath stated that they will have until February 28 to deploy Kannada language nameplates and submit compliance to the appropriate zone commissioners following the notice's issuance.
