The Delhi Police recently apprehended a man, Gopal Karaliya, on allegations of fabricating fake social media profiles and posting defamatory content alongside pictures of a 20-year-old female acquaintance, an official statement revealed.
The arrest stemmed from a complaint lodged at the Cyber North Police Station through the NCRP Portal. According to Deputy Commissioner of Police (North) Manoj Kumar Meena, the victim had initially connected with the accused via Instagram in 2018. However, over time, the interactions turned into harassment, with the accused pressuring her for an interfaith marriage.
The victim's ordeal escalated when she ceased communication with the accused. Karaliya allegedly proceeded to create two distinct profiles using the victim's pictures. He then posted objectionable material with derogatory comments and even shared her mobile number on these fraudulent profiles, causing significant distress to the victim.
"The accused could not accept this rejection. He created fake social media profiles and started posting derogatory remarks on her pictures to defame her," stated the DCP.
Following the victim's report and subsequent investigation, the accused was traced to Pune and apprehended on Monday by the Delhi Police.
The arrest underscores the misuse of social media platforms for harassment and the grave consequences such actions can have on individuals. The police have taken swift action against such cyber harassment, emphasizing the importance of stringent measures to curb such offenses and protect individuals from online abuse and defamation.
