Tragedy struck in Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala, as a 26-year-old doctor, Shahana, was discovered unconscious in her apartment and later declared deceased at the hospital on Tuesday. The devastating turn of events allegedly arose from the immense pressure of exorbitant dowry demands imposed by her fiance's family, leading Shahana to take her own life.
Following the distressing incident, the fiance, identified as R E Ruwais, was apprehended on Thursday for purportedly abetting the suicide. The Medical college police detained Ruwais early in the morning from his residence in Karunagappally, subsequently formalizing his arrest after a comprehensive interrogation.
Expressing grave concern over the matter, State Health Minister Veena George denounced the situation and suspended Ruwais from the medical college, citing the severity of the issue. The police have pressed charges against him under sections of abetment to suicide and the Dowry Prohibition Act based on evidence, including a suicide note recovered from Shahana's residence.
Shahana's family highlighted the distress she faced due to Ruwais and his family's adamant stance on demanding substantial dowry. Despite Shahana's assurances and attempts to comply, Ruwais allegedly emphasized the significance of money, leaving her devastated.
The Chief Minister, Pinarayi Vijayan, urged society to empower young women to reject proposals demanding dowry. He emphasized the need for a collective change in public opinion regarding such practices.
In response to the heartbreaking incident, the government ordered an inquiry into Shahana's death, with the Health Minister initiating an investigation and demanding stringent actions. Multiple authorities, including the State Minority Commission and the Women's Commission, have intervened, seeking comprehensive reports and actions to address the tragic circumstances leading to Shahana's demise.
The untimely loss of the young doctor has sparked outrage and concern, emphasizing the pressing need to eradicate the deep-seated issue of dowry-related pressures in society. Authorities are actively investigating the matter, aiming to bring justice to Shahana and prevent similar tragedies in the future.
