Indian cricketer Mohammed Shami found himself embroiled in controversy after Pakistani troll accounts stirred a social media storm, misconstruing his on-field action during the Cricket World Cup 2023. The trolls alleged that Shami, following a wicket, was prevented from performing 'Sajda,' a Muslim act of prostration, leading to the spread of hateful comments online.
Responding to the trolls, Shami vehemently dismissed their claims, clarifying the sequence of events and asserting his right to practice his religion in India. In a firm rebuttal, he condemned the attempt to misinterpret his body language on the field and emphasized that no one could hinder him from performing 'Sajda' if he wished to do so.
Speaking at an event organized by Aaj Tak, Shami addressed the controversy, highlighting his pride in being a Muslim and an Indian. He firmly asserted, "If I want to perform 'Sajda,' who will stop me? I won't prevent anyone from their religious practices, and I expect the same respect for mine. I proudly declare my identity as an Indian and a Muslim."
Additionally, Shami clarified that contrary to assumptions, he does not perform 'Sajda' on the cricket field after taking wickets, unlike some Pakistani or other Muslim cricketers. He expressed his readiness to perform 'Sajda' if he felt inclined, affirming his freedom to practice his faith without hindrance.
Shami's dignified response serves as a strong statement reaffirming religious freedom and mutual respect for diverse beliefs within India.
