An alert swept through South Delhi's Sainik Farm area as reports confirmed a leopard sighting on Saturday, urging nearby residents to remain indoors while authorities initiated an operation to capture the feline.
Officials are on high alert, deploying two cages in the vicinity to trap the full-grown leopard, estimated to weigh between 80 to 90 kg. Patrolling by police and forest personnel ensued, and cautionary announcements were made to notify residents. Additionally, two forest department teams have been stationed in the area to manage the situation.
An eyewitness account detailed the leopard's movements, describing its agitation amidst the surrounding crowds. The animal's appearance prompted a chase, with the leopard reportedly running towards the police station and then retreating into the jungle. Unfortunately, an elderly man suffered minor head injuries following an encounter with the leopard.
Forest officials received initial reports about the leopard's presence on Friday night. Collaborative efforts between the forest department, local police, and residents led to another sighting at 9:30 am the next day.
Video footage circulated online captured the leopard's presence near a farmhouse, showing a tense moment as a police officer hastily retreated when the leopard leaped from a wall and fled into the jungle.
Believed to have ventured from the nearby Asola Bhatti Wildlife Sanctuary, the leopard's appearance in the residential area has raised concerns about public safety. Efforts are underway to capture the animal and secure the neighborhood from potential risks posed by the unexpected visitor.
