  • Any projection or division, especially one of a somewhat rounded form
  • A rounded projection or division of a leaf.
  • A membranous flap on the sides of the toes of certain birds, as the coot.
  • A round projecting part of an organ, as of the liver, lungs, brain, etc. See Illust. of Brain.
  • The projecting part of a cam wheel or of a non-circular gear wheel.
  • A short, thick piece of anything.
  • A part corresponding to another part; anything which answers, or corresponds, to another; a copy; a duplicate; a facsimile.
  • One of two corresponding copies of an instrument; a duplicate.
  • A person who closely resembles another.

  • The after song; the part of a lyric ode which follows the strophe and antistrophe, -- the ancient ode being divided into strophe, antistrophe, and epode.
  • A species of lyric poem, invented by Archilochus, in which a longer verse is followed by a shorter one; as, the Epodes of Horace. It does not include the elegiac distich.
  • A feasting or feast; banquet.
  • One of the portions, equal or unequal, into which anything is divided, or regarded as divided; something less than a whole; a number, quantity, mass, or the like, regarded as going to make up, with others, a larger number, quantity, mass, etc., whether actually separate or not; a piece; a fragment; a fraction; a division; a member; a constituent.

  • One of the different melodies of a concerted composition, which heard in union compose its harmony; also, the music for each voice or instrument; as, the treble, tenor, or bass part; the violin part, etc.
  • To divide; to separate into distinct parts; to break into two or more parts or pieces; to sever.
  • To divide into shares; to divide and distribute; to allot; to apportion; to share.
  • To separate or disunite; to cause to go apart; to remove from contact or contiguity; to sunder.
  • Hence: To hold apart; to stand between; to intervene betwixt, as combatants.
  • To separate by a process of extraction, elimination, or secretion; as, to part gold from silver.
  • To leave; to quit.
  • To be broken or divided into parts or pieces; to break; to become separated; to go asunder; as, rope parts; his hair parts in the middle.

  • The number resulting from the division of one number by another, and showing how often a less number is contained in a greater; thus, the quotient of twelve divided by four is three.
