Hydroelectric power refers to the process of harnessing electricity using water. It is a process of efficient energy conservation from fast flowing water. It is one of the most established and widely used renewable sources of energy.
India has a huge reservoir of water. From this point of view, India has the fifth place in the world. The first hydroelectric power station in India was established in 1897 at Sidrapog in Darjeeling, West Bengal. Its capacity was 130 MW. In 1902, a second hydroelectric power house of 130 kW capacity was built on the banks of the Kaveri River at Sivasamudram in Karnataka. After independence, there was a huge growth in this sector.
The first hydroelectric project is located at Shivasamudram on the Kaveri River in the state of Karnataka.
,,The Tata Hydroelectric Project is located on the Western Ghats in Mumbai, Maharashtra.
,,Whose main objective was to provide electricity to Mumbai.
The electricity that is generated from the kinetic energy of falling or flowing water is called hydroelectricity. In 2020, about 4500 terawatt-hours (TWh) of hydroelectric power was generated worldwide, which is about one-sixth of the world's total electrical energy. Hydroelectricity produces less energy than all other renewable energy combined.
