World Blood Donation Day is celebrated every year on 14th June, this day has been declared by the World Health Organization as Blood Donation Day. Established in the year 2004, the purpose of this event is to raise awareness about the need for safe blood blood products and to express gratitude to blood donors by encouraging them to make safe life-saving donations of blood.
There are two main ways to get blood from a donor. Most blood is taken directly from a vein in the form of unchanged blood. Usually this blood is separated into separate fractions, mostly red blood cells and plasma, because more and more recipients only need a particular component. Another method is to take blood from a donor, separate it using a centrifuge or a filter, store the desired parts, and return the rest to the donor. This process is called apheresis and is often done using a specially designed machine.
A vein is used for direct blood transfusion, but blood may instead be taken from an artery. In this case, the blood is not stored, but is pumped directly from the donor to the recipient. This is an older method of blood transfusion and is rarely used today. The problem of logistics and setting up a bank for stored blood when returned doctors return to civilian life after treating wounded soldiers It was phased out during World War because of the pandemic.
