It is celebrated every year on 21 April to acknowledge the work of officers engaged in public service departments. The day is also a reminder for civil servants to run the administrative machinery of the country collectively and with dedication towards the service of the citizens. And there is no official theme to celebrate this day.
As we know that civil service is that service which is responsible for the public administration of the government of the country. This does not include legislative, judiciary and military personnel. Let us tell you that the members of the civil service do not take any pledge for any political ruling party but are the executors of the policies of the ruling political party.
The reason for celebrating this special day as National Civil Services Day is very old in history. The first Home Minister of our country, also known as the Iron Man of India, Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel considered civil services as an essential component of nation building. While addressing the Probationary Officers at the All India Administrative Services Training School at Metcalfe House, Delhi in 1947, he called civil servants/services for the first time as the "Steel Frame of India". It precisely emphasizes the role played by civil servants and what is expected of them for the development and well-being of the nation.
To mark this historic day that determined the basic role of civil services in modern India after independence, the Government of India designated 21 April 2006 as National Civil Services Day.
Organized by the Department of Administrative Reforms and Public Grievances (DARPG) and the Ministry of Personnel, Public Grievances and Pensions, the event brings together officers from the Central and State Governments who have been recognized for their exceptional services in their respective fields. The day serves as a platform to inspire, appreciate and recognize the dedication and hard work of civil servants, along with promoting excellence in public service.
