The English equivalent of the word 'democracy' is 'democracy', which is derived from the Greek root word 'demos'. Demos means 'common people' and the word 'cresi' has been added to this word which means 'rule'.
Governance systems like monarchy, class system, authoritarian system and democracy etc. have been prevalent in different states of the world. If observed historically, the democratic governance system in India had started from the pre-Vedic period itself. In ancient times, a strong democratic system existed in India. We get evidence of this from ancient literature, coins and inscriptions. There is evidence of this in the description of foreign travelers and scholars.
India is one of the oldest civilizations in the world with multicolored diversity and rich cultural heritage. Along with this, it has also been molding itself with the changing times. India has made multidimensional social and economic progress in the last 69 years since independence.
India has become self-sufficient in agriculture and is now counted among the most industrialized countries in the world. In these 69 years, India has made its place among the world community as a self-reliant, capable and self-respecting country.
The Constituent Assembly was formed on the recommendation of the Cabinet Mission and this Constituent Assembly gave shape to the Indian Constitution. Various committees of the Constituent Assembly worked to carve out the constitutional provisions through various meetings.
Addressing the Constituent Assembly, Jawaharlal Nehru said, “The first duty of this assembly is to declare India free by providing a constitution, to provide food for the hungry and clothes for the destitute, and to provide maximum opportunities to every person in India. So that he can develop to the best of his ability.
The Constituent Assembly was inclusive of diversity. There were disagreements among the members on many provisions, but despite so many deadlocks, special provisions were made for the general public in the Indian Constitution by reaching a certain conclusion.
