The Union Cabinet has approved the National Green Hydrogen Mission. Under this, the government has a plan to cut emissions. India has approved an incentive plan of Rs 174.9 billion to promote green hydrogen.
The mission plans to make India energy-independent, decarbonize key sectors of the economy, and transform it into a global hub for the production, use, and export of alternative fuels and its derivatives.
The Union Cabinet on Wednesday approved an incentive scheme of Rs 19,744 crore for this mission. Under the mission, it is expected that India will achieve the target of 5 million tonnes of hydrogen production capacity by 2030.
The National Green Hydrogen Mission plans to provide direct incentives for green hydrogen production worth Rs 13,000 crore. In this, an incentive of about Rs 4,500 crore has been envisaged for the manufacture of electrolyzers.
The mission will be headed by the Cabinet Secretary and an Empowered Group of Secretaries. Union Minister Anurag Thakur told reporters that more than six lakh job opportunities are expected to be created under the mission.
Green hydrogen is a kind of clean energy. It is made through electrolysis with the help of renewable energy and the process of making it is completely free of carbon dioxide emissions. There are two ways to make hydrogen. The first is made by passing electricity through water, the second by breaking down hydrogen and carbon from natural gas. If clean energy is used in electrolysis, then the hydrogen produced from it will be called green. Experts say that it can help in making oil refining, fertilizer, cement, steel and heavy industries carbon free.
