Swachh Bharat Abhiyan, or the Clean India Mission, is a nationwide cleanliness campaign launched by the Government of India on 2nd October 2014. The campaign aims to make India clean and free of open defecation by the 150th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi in 2019.
The Swachh Bharat Abhiyan has two main objectives:
1. Open Defecation Free (ODF) India: The campaign aims to eradicate the practice of open defecation in India by providing access to toilets and promoting the use of sanitation facilities. It focuses on constructing individual household toilets, community and public toilets, and promoting proper waste management and sanitation practices.
2. Solid Waste Management: The campaign also emphasizes proper waste management by promoting segregation of waste at source, efficient collection and transportation systems, and disposal of solid waste in a scientific and environmentally friendly manner.
To achieve these objectives, the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan has implemented various strategies and initiatives, including:
1. Construction of toilets: The government has undertaken the construction of millions of toilets across the country, particularly in rural areas and in schools, to provide access to sanitation facilities for all.
2. Behavior change campaigns: The campaign aims to create awareness and promote behavioral changes among individuals and communities to adopt clean and hygienic practices. It includes activities such as mass media campaigns, community mobilization, and grassroots-level initiatives.
3. Cleanliness drives: Regular cleanliness drives are organized at various levels, including schools, colleges, offices, and public places, to promote cleanliness and hygiene.
4. Waste management: The campaign focuses on improving waste management practices by promoting waste segregation, recycling, and scientific disposal of solid waste.
5. Swachh Bharat Mission (Gramin) and Swachh Bharat Mission (Urban): The campaign has separate components for rural and urban areas, with specific strategies tailored to address the unique challenges and requirements of each.
Swachh Bharat Abhiyan has witnessed significant progress since its launch, with millions of toilets constructed, a reduction in open defecation, and improved cleanliness and waste management practices in many areas. However, challenges such as behavioral change, infrastructure development, and sustainability of the initiatives still remain. The campaign continues to be a major priority for the government, and efforts are ongoing to achieve the goals of a clean and hygienic India.
