The Kargil War, also known as the Kargil conflict, took place in 1999 between India and Pakistan. It was a military conflict that occurred in the Kargil district of Indian-administered Jammu and Kashmir. The war lasted for around three months, from May to July 1999.
The conflict began when the Indian military discovered that Pakistani forces, disguised as Kashmiri militants, had infiltrated Indian territory and occupied strategic positions in the high-altitude mountainous region of Kargil. The aim of the Pakistani forces was to cut off the vital link between the regions of Ladakh and Kashmir and bring international attention to the Kashmir issue.
The Indian military launched a large-scale military operation, named Operation Vijay, to recapture the occupied positions and evict the Pakistani intruders. The rugged terrain and high altitude made the operation extremely challenging. The Indian Army faced heavy artillery fire and fierce resistance from the well-entrenched Pakistani forces.
The conflict received significant media coverage and international attention, particularly because it was the first instance of a direct military engagement between India and Pakistan since they both became nuclear powers. The international community called for a peaceful resolution and urged both countries to exercise restraint.
India eventually managed to regain control of the occupied positions with the use of ground forces, artillery, and air power. The war concluded in July 1999 when the Indian Army announced the successful eviction of Pakistani forces from the region.
The Kargil War resulted in the loss of many lives on both sides, with estimates ranging from hundreds to thousands. It also highlighted the need for better border surveillance and intelligence-gathering measures in the region.
Following the conflict, both India and Pakistan made efforts to improve their bilateral relations and reduce tensions. However, the underlying issues surrounding the status of Kashmir remain unresolved, and sporadic instances of violence and cross-border skirmishes continue to occur in the region.
