In a bid to restore peace and stability in the northeastern state of Manipur, the government has taken a decisive step by prohibiting the circulation of images and videos that depict violent activities. The ethnic clashes in Manipur have primarily involved the Meiteis and tribal Kukis, with a tragic toll of 178 lives lost and thousands displaced. To address this situation and prevent the further exacerbation of the law-and-order crisis, the Manipur government, through an order issued by Commissioner (Home) T Ranjit Singh on behalf of Governor Anusuiya Uikey, has taken a firm stance. The order explicitly states that nobody will be allowed to circulate or spread videos, images, or pictures that depict violence through various social media platforms or electronic devices like tablets, computers, or mobile phones. The ban also extends to sending bulk SMS.
Individuals found in possession of videos or images that depict harm or damage to the body or public/private property are directed to approach the nearest superintendent of police to submit the materials for appropriate legal action. Furthermore, anyone discovered circulating such content or misusing technology to incite violence or hatred will face repercussions under the relevant laws.
This proactive measure is being seen as a positive step towards restoring normalcy in Manipur, a state that has been grappling with prolonged ethnic tensions. The government's intent is clear: to curb the spread of inflammatory content that can inflame already tense situations and contribute to the breakdown of law and order.
