The upcoming G20 Summit scheduled to take place in Delhi from September 8 to 10 has prompted the implementation of strict traffic restrictions and alternate commute plans. The event, which will host prominent world leaders including US President Joe Biden, Chinese Premier Xi Jinping, French President Emmanuel Macron, and Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, necessitates enhanced security measures in the city.
The traffic plan shared by the Delhi Police outlines various restricted and regulated zones to ensure the safety and security of the summit. The New Delhi district, known as the Lutyens’ Zone, falls under Controlled Zone 1, where only residents and essential services personnel will be allowed to enter upon proving their identity. This restricted access will be in effect from September 9, 5 am, to September 10.
Controlled Zone 2 includes certain stretches leading to the venue, such as Vikas Marg to ITO, roads near the Red Fort, and areas near major train stations. Within the Regulated Zone, which covers areas within the Ring Road, there will be intermittent pickets, allowing only authorized vehicles, emergency services, and those heading to the airport or train stations to pass through.
The traffic plan emphasizes the use of public transportation, specifically the Metro, during the summit days. However, some Metro stations might be temporarily closed based on separate requests from the Delhi Police. Taxi and auto-rickshaw services will be limited within Controlled Zone 1, with exceptions for residents and tourists with confirmed hotel bookings.
The restrictions will affect various sectors, including business and education, as markets, offices, and schools are ordered to close between September 8 and 10. These measures are aimed at facilitating the movement of VIPs and attendees between the Pragati Maidan convention center and hotels within Controlled Zone 1.
Despite the inconvenience caused by these restrictions, they are deemed necessary to ensure the smooth functioning of the summit and the safety of all attendees. Over 10,000 police personnel are expected to be deployed to oversee traffic management and security during the event.
In addition to the traffic restrictions, efforts will be made to provide hassle-free access for medical emergency vehicles and the general public via alternate routes and modes of transportation. The Delhi Traffic Police have issued an advisory detailing recommended routes for travelers to navigate around the restricted areas.
As Delhi prepares to host the G20 Summit, the city's residents and visitors are urged to cooperate with the outlined traffic plans and alternate commuting arrangements. While these measures may disrupt daily routines, they are essential for ensuring the success of the event and the safety of all participants.
