In a distressing incident that unfolded in Kasan village, Manesar, a man's struggle with alcohol addiction took a violent turn on September 7, leaving his wife and mother injured. Parveen Sharma, a 36-year-old man, had returned home from a rehabilitation center just ten days prior to the incident. His frustration over being repeatedly sent to rehab by his wife, Jwala Rani, led to a shocking act of violence.
Jwala Rani, 32, was giving tuition to their two children when her husband approached her, seeking money. Despite giving him the money, the situation escalated rapidly. Parveen Sharma assaulted her, gripping her neck, and even attacked his own mother when she attempted to intervene.
The violence escalated further as he kicked both women down a staircase, causing them injuries. Fearing for their lives, the two women locked themselves in a room with the children. Sharma's actions took an even more dangerous turn when he attempted to ignite a cooking cylinder nozzle. Fortunately, Rani and her mother-in-law, with the help of a neighbor, managed to stop him.
However, the most shocking part of this harrowing incident was yet to come. After the chaos had subsided, Sharma asked Rani for a cup of tea. When she handed it to him, he callously splashed the scalding tea on her face before pouring the rest of it on her again. She was promptly rushed to a private hospital in Manesar with the assistance of concerned neighbors.
Rani bravely reported the incident, leading to the registration of a first information report (FIR) against Sharma under sections 323 (voluntarily causing hurt) and 506 (criminal intimidation) of the Indian Penal Code at the IMT Manesar police station.
The heartbreaking aspect of this incident is not just the physical violence but also the underlying issue of addiction. Sharma's repeated attempts to combat his alcohol addiction through rehabilitation had proven unsuccessful, driving him to despair. Rani, in her complaint, revealed that her husband had attempted to strangle her multiple times when she refused to provide him money for alcohol. He had even tried to set their house on fire on several occasions.
This incident serves as a stark reminder of the dire consequences that addiction can bring to individuals and their families. It emphasizes the importance of addressing addiction as a societal issue, requiring not just punitive measures but also compassionate rehabilitation and support systems.
As Inspector Devender Kumar at IMT Manesar police station investigates the case, it underscores the need for a holistic approach to addiction, focusing on prevention, intervention, and rehabilitation, to prevent such tragic incidents from recurring in the future.
