The recent statement by Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, declaring that 'Sanatana Dharma' is the only religion, has stirred a fresh controversy in Indian politics. This comes in the midst of an ongoing debate about the significance of 'Sanatana Dharma' sparked by remarks from Tamil Nadu minister Udhayanidhi Stalin last month.
In response to Yogi Adityanath's statement, Congress leader Udit Raj has expressed skepticism, asserting that "Sanatana is nothing." Raj goes on to claim that the invocation of 'Sanatana' has been a political tactic aimed at winning votes, and he believes that this strategy will no longer be effective.
Udit Raj further elaborated on his perspective, emphasizing the connection between 'Sanatana' and caste in India. He questioned why, if everyone is considered 'Sanatani,' only certain castes receive reservations and job preferences. According to him, this inequality among people and the existence of caste dynamics contradict the notion of a universal 'Sanatana Dharma.'
Yogi Adityanath's comments were made during a session held at the Gorakhnath temple, where he stated, "Sanatan Dharma is the religion of humanity, and any attack on it will put entire humanity in danger." He also characterized other religions as "sects or methods of worship."
The controversy surrounding 'Sanatana Dharma' gained momentum when Tamil Nadu minister Udhayanidhi Stalin equated it with diseases like dengue and malaria. Stalin's remarks suggested that 'Sanatana Dharma' should be eradicated rather than opposed, likening it to diseases that need to be eliminated.
Additionally, Stalin brought up the issue of social discrimination when he highlighted that President Droupadi Murmu was not invited to the inauguration of the new Parliament building, while certain 'Hindi actors' were, allegedly due to her tribal background and widowhood. He insinuated that such discrimination was a reflection of what he termed 'Sanatan Dharma.'
The controversy surrounding 'Sanatana Dharma' reflects the complex and deeply rooted discussions around religion, caste, and social justice in India. The differing perspectives and statements from political leaders continue to ignite debates and discussions across the nation.
