As the Israel-Hamas conflict continues to escalate, the Congress Working Committee (CWC) of India's Congress Party has reaffirmed its longstanding support for the rights of the Palestinian people. In a resolution passed during a four-hour meeting, the CWC expressed its concern and sorrow over the ongoing war in the Middle East, which has resulted in the loss of over a thousand lives in the last two days.
The resolution issued by the Congress' top decision-making body stated, "The CWC reiterates its long-standing support for the rights of the Palestinian people to land, self-government, and to live with dignity and respect."
Additionally, the Congress Working Committee called for an immediate ceasefire and urged both parties to engage in negotiations to address all outstanding matters, including the root causes of the present conflict.
These statements come after the Congress had condemned the attacks on the people of Israel, emphasizing that violence of any kind does not provide a solution and must come to an end.
Congress general secretary Jairam Ramesh, on behalf of the party, had previously stated that the Congress believes in fulfilling the legitimate aspirations of the Palestinian people through dialogue while also taking into consideration the national security interests of Israel.
"The Indian National Congress condemns the brutal attacks on the people of Israel," Ramesh said. He further emphasized that the party has consistently maintained that the legitimate aspirations of the Palestinian people, seeking a life marked by self-respect, equality, and dignity, should be achieved through dialogue and negotiations, all the while ensuring Israel's legitimate national security interests.
The ongoing conflict in the region has seen a significant escalation, with Hamas launching a surprise and unprecedented attack on Israel's southern areas. Israel, in response, has faced one of its deadliest days in at least half a century, with over 700 casualties and more than 2,100 injuries. Meanwhile, the Gaza Strip has also witnessed heavy casualties and injuries as a result of Israel's counterattack.
The Congress Party's reiteration of support for the Palestinian people's rights and its call for an immediate ceasefire and negotiations reflect India's stance on the Israel-Palestine conflict, advocating for peaceful dialogue and the protection of human rights in the region.
