Moving from Delhi to Mumbai in 2005, singer Akriti Kakar found herself enchanted by the vibrant and joyous celebrations of Ganesh Utsav in the city of dreams. Over the past eight years, Akriti has not only embraced this cultural extravaganza but has also made it a cherished annual tradition in her own home. In a candid interview, she reveals the beauty and significance of her Ganesh Utsav celebrations.
Discovering the Magic of Mumbai's Ganesh Utsav
Akriti Kakar recalls her initial awe upon witnessing the fervor of Ganesh Utsav when she first arrived in Mumbai. Hailing from Delhi, where the festival wasn't as widely celebrated, she had no prior memories associated with it. However, her move to Mumbai changed everything. "Ever since I moved to Mumbai, it has been something I look forward to every single year," she shares.
A Personal Tradition Takes Root
Upon getting married to Chirag Arora, Akriti and her husband made a collective decision to not just visit others' homes during Ganesh Utsav but to bring Lord Ganesha to their own home as well. Thus, a heartfelt tradition was born, one that they have faithfully followed for eight years.
"At our place, the festival is about getting immersed with happiness, auspicious energies, having yummy prasad cooked at home, and enjoying all the impromptu musical jamming," Akriti explains. Music is an integral part of her life, and she has even released a song titled "Morya Karo Mangal," adding to the festive fervor.
Eco-Friendly Celebrations
Akriti Kakar and her family have also been committed to eco-friendly celebrations for the past seven years. They have been using eco-friendly idols and conduct the visarjan (immersion) at home. Their celebration begins with a hawan in the morning, followed by an aarti that the family joyously sings together. They've been creative with their idol choices, opting for paper mache, multani mitti, and even plant-based idols. For prasad, they choose to give plants and fruits, contributing to a greener and more sustainable celebration.
A Time of Blessings and New Beginnings
Ganesh Utsav holds a special place in Akriti's heart. She fondly remembers making lists, visiting friends' homes for darshan, dressing up, and indulging in delicious prasad. But it's not just about the rituals; it's also about the prayers. Akriti shares that she prays for everything she desires, and sometimes, the most beautiful unasked prayers are answered during the Ganpati days. Lord Ganesha, known as the remover of obstacles, has become a god of new beginnings for her.
In conclusion, Akriti Kakar's journey with Ganesh Utsav reflects the essence of Mumbai's vibrant culture and the spirit of embracing traditions. Her eco-conscious approach and heartfelt celebrations serve as an inspiration for others to celebrate festivals with devotion and environmental responsibility. Ganesh Utsav, beyond its religious significance, symbolizes unity, love, and the joy of new beginnings for those like Akriti who have wholeheartedly embraced it.
