Citizen amendment act of India
The Citizen Amendment Act (CAA) of India is a law that was passed in December 2019 by the Parliament of India. The act seeks to provide citizenship to religious minorities from Pakistan, Bangladesh and Afghanistan who have been residing in India since 2014. It has been met with strong opposition from many sections of Indian society, as it is seen as a violation of the secular principles enshrined in the Indian Constitution.
The CAA has sparked protests and debates across the country, with many arguing that it discriminates against Muslims and violates fundamental rights enshrined in the Constitutions.
The law provides a path to Indian citizenship for persecuted religious minorities from Afghanistan, Bangladesh, and Pakistan who entered the country before December 31, 2014.
The most significant implication of this law is its potential to further divide India along communal lines. By granting Indian citizenship to certain religious minorities while excluding Muslims, the CAA is seen by many as discriminatory and exacerbating religious divisions in the country.
