The nominations for the 96th Academy Awards were announced this morning, with a number of surprises and snubs. Leading the pack with 12 nominations is Everything Everywhere All at Once, the Daniels' mind-bending sci-fi comedy. Close behind with 10 nominations is The Fabelmans, Steven Spielberg's semi-autobiographical drama.
Other notable nominees include Tár, Todd Field's long-awaited return to filmmaking after a 16-year hiatus; Women Talking, Sarah Polley's adaptation of Miriam Toews' novel about a Mennonite community grappling with a series of sexual assaults; and The Whale, Darren Aronofsky's drama starring Brendan Fraser as a reclusive man struggling with obesity.
There were also a number of snubs, with films like Nope, She Said, and Blonde failing to receive any major nominations. However, there were also some breakout performances recognized, with Danielle Deadwyler and Keke Palmer both receiving Best Actress nominations for their roles in Till and Nope, respectively.
