In the midst of indignation over a viral video in Manipur, the BJP claimed that two tribal women were stripped naked and abused a few days ago in West Bengal's Malda. In the midst of uproar over a viral video showing women being paraded naked by a mob in strife-torn Manipur, the Bharatiya Janata Party said on Saturday that two tribal women were stripped naked and tortured just a few days ago in West Bengal's Malda while police stood by and watched.
According to BJP I-T cell leader Amit Malviya, who is also the party's co-incharge for West Bengal, the event occurred on July 19 in Malda, with a "frenzied mob baying for her blood."
"It had all the makings of a tragedy that should have 'broken' Mamata Banerjee's heart, and she, instead of merely outraging, could have acted, since she is also the home minister of Bengal," he tweeted, referring to Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee, who has been outspoken in her condemnation of the Manipur incident.
The BJP has chastised Banerjee for isolated acts of violence during the recent West Bengal panchayat election.
With opposition parties targeting the BJP over an incident in which two women were paraded naked in ethnic violence-hit Manipur, where it is in power, the party has been emphasizing similar cases of atrocities against women in states ruled by its rivals, including the Congress and the Mamata Banerjee-led Trinamool Congress.
Malviya lashed out at Banerjee, saying she opted to do nothing in the issue. "She neither condemned the barbarism nor expressed pain and anguish because doing so would have exposed her own failing as chief minister," he said.
However, a day later, she cried copious tears and shouted blue murder because it was politically advantageous, according to Malviya, in response to her attack on the BJP over the Manipur episode, which drew a public uproar after a video of it went viral on May 4.
"The horror continues in West Bengal," Malviya stated. Two tribal women were stripped naked, tormented, and severely beaten while police stood by and watched in the Pakua Hat region of the Bamangola Police Station in Malda."
