Pune was jolted by a brazen act of violence as notorious gangster Sharad Mohol fell victim to a targeted shooting on his wedding anniversary. The 40-year-old succumbed to gunshot wounds inflicted by three to four assailants in the Sutardara area of Kothrud around 1:30 pm. Despite swift medical attention, Mohol passed away while undergoing treatment at a local private hospital.
According to police reports, the assailants believed to be members of Mohol's own gang, fired two rounds at close range, leaving him critically injured. Authorities have mobilized teams to apprehend the attackers, with the primary suspect identified as Sahil alias Munna Polekar, a resident of Sutardara. An investigation is underway to apprehend Polekar and his accomplices.
Pune City Police Commissioner Ritesh Kumar expressed initial suspicions that the attack on Mohol stemmed from internal discord within his gang, specifically citing a potential financial dispute as the likely trigger for the fatal altercation.
Notably, Mohol's recent associations have garnered attention. His wife and Swarad Foundation president, Swati Mohol, made headlines after joining the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in the presence of district Guardian Minister Chandrakant Patil. This development adds layers of complexity to the narrative surrounding Mohol's life and affiliations.
The deceased gangster had a history with the law, bearing a record of several cases including murder and dacoity. Mohol notably faced accusations in the murder of suspected Indian Mujahideen operative Mohammad Qateel Siddiqui within Yerawada jail, from which he was acquitted. The police suspect that the motive behind the recent shooting might be rooted in disputes over land and financial matters.
The brazen nature of the attack, coupled with its timing on Mohol's wedding anniversary, underscores the audacity and gravity of gang-related violence prevalent in the area. The incident not only sheds light on the internal rivalries within criminal networks but also serves as a reminder of the complex interplay between politics, crime, and personal disputes.
Pune's law enforcement agencies are actively pursuing leads to bring the assailants to justice, aiming to quell the ongoing tensions within the criminal circles. However, the incident remains a stark reminder of the challenges posed by organized crime and the repercussions it casts on the social and political fabric of the region.
