In the midst of an Israeli-Palestinian conflict that has claimed thousands of lives on both sides, India today dispatched medical supplies and disaster relief gear to the Gaza Strip.
"The material includes essential life-saving medicines, surgical items, tents, sleeping bags, tarpaulins, sanitary utilities, and water purification tablets among other necessary items," Arindam Bagchi, a spokesman for the foreign ministry, stated on X, formerly known as Twitter.
In retaliation for Hamas' October 7 onslaught, in which its agents murdered, disfigured, or set fire to at least 1,400 people, the Israeli military has bombarded Gaza with ceaseless attacks.
As per the health ministry administered by Hamas, the counterstrikes have resulted in the deaths of over 4,300 Palestinians, primarily civilians, and have left large areas of the heavily inhabited territory reduced to smoking ruins. Locals in Gaza claimed they had no idea where to flee or how to keep their families safe.
Mahmoud Abbas, the president of Palestine, received an assurance from Prime Minister Narendra Modi earlier this week that India would keep providing humanitarian aid to the Palestinians.
"There is grave and persistent concern over civilian casualties in the current fighting. PM Modi has stated on X that "those responsible should be held accountable."
UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres called for a humanitarian ceasefire "to end this god awful nightmare" during a peace conference in Egypt.
Following discussions, on Saturday supplies of food, water, and medicine—but not fuel—crossed into Gaza from Egypt.
Later, the border was blocked, and UN representatives stated that much more was required. Five UN organisations released a statement stating that "before the most recent hostilities, Gaza was in a desperate humanitarian situation."
