Meaning of छत in English

  • The cover of any building, including the roofing (see Roofing) and all the materials and construction necessary to carry and maintain the same upon the walls or other uprights. In the case of a building with vaulted ceilings protected by an outer roof, some writers call the vault the roof, and the outer protection the roof mask. It is better, however, to consider the vault as the ceiling only, in cases where it has farther covering.
  • That which resembles, or corresponds to, the covering or the ceiling of a house; as, the roof of a cavern; the roof of the mouth.
  • The surface or bed of rock immediately overlying a bed of coal or a flat vein.
  • To cover with a roof.
  • To inclose in a house; figuratively, to shelter.

  • The materials of which a roof is composed; materials for a roof.
  • Hence, the roof itself; figuratively, shelter.
  • The wedging, as of a horse or car, against the top of an underground passage.

  • A raised level space, shelf, or platform of earth, supported on one or more sides by a wall, a bank of tuft, or the like, whether designed for use or pleasure.
  • A balcony, especially a large and uncovered one.
  • A flat roof to a house; as, the buildings of the Oriental nations are covered with terraces.
  • A street, or a row of houses, on a bank or the side of a hill; hence, any street, or row of houses.
  • A level plain, usually with a steep front, bordering a river, a lake, or sometimes the sea.
  • To form into a terrace or terraces; to furnish with a terrace or terraces, as, to terrace a garden, or a building.

  • A covering fixed over a bed, dais, or the like, or carried on poles over an exalted personage or a sacred object, etc. chiefly as a mark of honor.
  • An ornamental projection, over a door, window, niche, etc.
  • Also, a rooflike covering, supported on pillars over an altar, a statue, a fountain, etc.
  • To cover with, or as with, a canopy.
  • To overlay or cover the inner side of the roof of; to furnish with a ceiling; as, to ceil a room.
  • To line or finish a surface, as of a wall, with plaster, stucco, thin boards, or the like.
