Meaning of छंद in English

  • A number of lines or verses forming a division of a song or poem, and agreeing in meter, rhyme, number of lines, etc., with other divisions; a part of a poem, ordinarily containing every variation of measure in that poem; a combination or arrangement of lines usually recurring; whether like or unlike, in measure.
  • An apartment or division in a building; a room or chamber.
  • In Greek choruses and dances, the movement of the chorus while turning from the right to the left of the orchestra; hence, the strain, or part of the choral ode, sung during this movement. Also sometimes used of a stanza of modern verse. See the Note under Antistrophe.
  • of Strophe
  • A stanza, epigram, or poem, consisting of four verses or lines.
  • A forked support; a crotch.
  • A time note, with a stem, having one fourth the value of a semibreve, one half that of a minim, and twice that of a quaver; a quarter note.
  • An indentation in the glacis of the covered way, at a point where a traverse is placed.
  • The arrangement of a body of troops, either forward or rearward, so as to form a line nearly perpendicular to the general line of battle.
  • A bracket. See Bracket.
  • An instrument of a hooked form, used in certain cases in the extraction of a fetus.
  • A perverse fancy; a whim which takes possession of the mind; a conceit.
  • To play music in measured time.

  • A small, strong-winged European falcon (Falco subbuteo), formerly trained for hawking.

  • A strong, active horse, of a middle size, said to have been originally from Ireland; an ambling nag.
  • A stick, often with the head or figure of a horse, on which boys make believe to ride.
  • A subject or plan upon which one is constantly setting off; a favorite and ever-recurring theme of discourse, thought, or effort; that which occupies one's attention unduly, or to the weariness of others; a ruling passion.
