Meaning of ঝিনুক in English

  • A univalve mollusk of the genus Haliotis. The shell is lined with mother-of-pearl, and used for ornamental purposes; the sea-ear. Several large species are found on the coast of California, clinging closely to the rocks.
  • A flattened marine univalve shell of the genus Haliotis; -- called also sea-ear. See Abalone.
  • Any one of many species of marine bivalve shells of the genus Mytilus, and related genera, of the family Mytidae. The common mussel (Mytilus edulis; see Illust. under Byssus), and the larger, or horse, mussel (Modiola modiolus), inhabiting the shores both of Europe and America, are edible. The former is extensively used as food in Europe.
  • Any one of numerous species of Unio, and related fresh-water genera; -- called also river mussel. See Naiad, and Unio.
  • Any marine bivalve mollusk of the genus Ostrea. They are usually found adhering to rocks or other fixed objects in shallow water along the seacoasts, or in brackish water in the mouth of rivers. The common European oyster (Ostrea edulis), and the American oyster (Ostrea Virginiana), are the most important species.
  • A name popularly given to the delicate morsel contained in a small cavity of the bone on each side of the lower part of the back of a fowl.
  • Gathering, or dredging for, oysters.
  • The shell of any marine mollusk.
