Meaning of पंच in English

  • A person, or one of two or more persons, chosen by parties who have a controversy, to determine their differences. See Arbitration.
  • One who has the power of deciding or prescribing without control; a ruler; a governor.
  • A beverage composed of wine or distilled liquor, water (or milk), sugar, and the juice of lemon, with spice or mint; -- specifically named from the kind of spirit used; as rum punch, claret punch, champagne punch, etc.
  • The buffoon or harlequin of a puppet show.
  • A short, fat fellow; anything short and thick.
  • One of a breed of large, heavy draught horses; as, the Suffolk punch.
  • To thrust against; to poke; as, to punch one with the end of a stick or the elbow.

  • A paunch mat; -- called also panch.

  • Hence: An extract from anything, containing its rarest virtue, or most subtle and essential constituent in a small quantity; pure or concentrated essence.

  • Of the nature of a quintessence; purest.
  • A kind of flower cluster in which the flower stalks radiate from a common point, as in the carrot and milkweed. It is simple or compound; in the latter case, each peduncle bears another little umbel, called umbellet, or umbellule.
  • The office of an umpire; the power, right, or authority of an umpire to decide.
  • The act of umpiring; arbitrament.
  • A person to whose sole decision a controversy or question between parties is referred; especially, one chosen to see that the rules of a game, as cricket, baseball, or the like, are strictly observed.
  • A third person, who is to decide a controversy or question submitted to arbitrators in case of their disagreement.
  • To decide as umpire; to arbitrate; to settle, as a dispute.
  • To perform the duties of umpire in or for; as, to umpire a game.
  • To act as umpire or arbitrator.
