Meaning of खड्डा in English

  • A large cavity or hole in the ground, either natural or artificial; a cavity in the surface of a body; an indentation
  • The shaft of a coal mine; a coal pit.
  • A large hole in the ground from which material is dug or quarried; as, a stone pit; a gravel pit; or in which material is made by burning; as, a lime pit; a charcoal pit.
  • A vat sunk in the ground; as, a tan pit.
  • Any abyss; especially, the grave, or hades.
  • A covered deep hole for entrapping wild beasts; a pitfall; hence, a trap; a snare. Also used figuratively.
  • A depression or hollow in the surface of the human body
  • The hollow place under the shoulder or arm; the axilla, or armpit.

  • To introduce as an antagonist; to set forward for or in a contest; as, to pit one dog against another.
  • One who pities.
  • One who works in a pit, as in mining, in sawing timber, etc.
  • The connecting rod in a sawmill; also, sometimes, a connecting rod in other machinery.

  • Having minute thin spots; as, pitted ducts in the vascular parts of vegetable tissue.
  • A circular hole formed in the rocky beds of rivers by the grinding action of stones or gravel whirled round by the water in what was at first a natural depression of the rock.

  • The process of working clay, loam, pulverized ore, etc., with water, to render it compact, or impervious to liquids; also, the process of rendering anything impervious to liquids by means of puddled material.

  • The art or process of converting cast iron into wrought iron or steel by subjecting it to intense heat and frequent stirring in a reverberatory furnace in the presence of oxidizing substances, by which it is freed from a portion of its carbon and other impurities.
