Meaning of পক্ষীবিশেষ in English

  • An American bird (Galeoscoptes Carolinensis), allied to the mocking bird, and like it capable of imitating the notes of other birds, but less perfectly. Its note resembles at times the mewing of a cat.
  • A bird of Europe (Fringilla coelebs), having a variety of very sweet songs, and highly valued as a cage bird; -- called also copper finch.
  • A small bird, the blackcap titmouse (Parus atricapillus), of North America; -- named from its note.
  • A species of European warbler (Sylvia hippolais); -- called also chip-chap, and pettychaps.
  • Alt. of Emew
  • A large Australian bird, of two species (Dromaius Novae-Hollandiae and D. irroratus), related to the cassowary and the ostrich. The emu runs swiftly, but is unable to fly.
  • An instrument for cracking nuts.
  • A European bird (Nucifraga caryocatactes), allied to the magpie and crow. Its color is dark brown, spotted with white. It feeds on nuts, seeds, and insects.

  • An American fly-catching warbler (Setophaga ruticilla). The male is black, with large patches of orange-red on the sides, wings, and tail. The female is olive, with yellow patches.
  • A bird having a distinct band of color across the tail, as the hen harrier.
  • A light sail set abaft and beyong the leech of a boom-and-gaff sail; -- called also ringsail.
  • A small European singing bird (Erythacus rubecula), having a reddish breast; -- called also robin redbreast, robinet, and ruddock.
  • An American singing bird (Merula migratoria), having the breast chestnut, or dull red. The upper parts are olive-gray, the head and tail blackish. Called also robin redbreast, and migratory thrush.
  • Any one of several species of Australian warblers of the genera Petroica, Melanadrays, and allied genera; as, the scarlet-breasted robin (Petroica mullticolor).
  • Any one of several Asiatic birds; as, the Indian robins. See Indian robin, below.
  • The European robin.
  • A piece of gold money; -- probably because the gold of coins was often reddened by copper alloy. Called also red ruddock, and golden ruddock.
