  • The act of applying; application; [Obs.] subservience.
  • The thing applied or used as a means to an end; an apparatus or device; as, to use various appliances; a mechanical appliance; a machine with its appliances.
  • That which belongs to something else; an adjunct; an appendage; an accessory; something annexed to another thing more worthy; in common parlance and legal acceptation, something belonging to another thing as principal, and which passes as incident to it, as a right of way, or other easement to land; a right of common to pasture, an outhouse, barn, garden, or orchard, to a house or messuage. In a strict legal sense, land can never pass as an appurtenance to land.
  • The clothes, tents, utensils, and provisions of an army.
  • The trunks, valises, satchels, etc., which a traveler carries with him on a journey; luggage.
  • Purulent matter.
  • Trashy talk.
  • A man of bad character.
  • A woman of loose morals; a prostitute.

  • The act of equipping, or the state of being equipped, as for a voyage or expedition.
  • Whatever is used in equipping; necessaries for an expedition or voyage; the collective designation for the articles comprising an outfit; equipage; as, a railroad equipment (locomotives, cars, etc. ; for carrying on business); horse equipments; infantry equipments; naval equipments; laboratory equipments.
